A new entry opens the transformed Athletic Center to the street.

Medgar Evers College Athletic Center

The Athletic Center at Medgar Evers College creates an exciting environment for athletes and students.

Located in Central Brooklyn, the new Athletic Center at CUNY Medgar Evers College will transform an existing athletic facility into a building that will serve more students and instill a sense of pride for the entire school. The project is the first phase of a $26M building renovation master plan by SYA.

A new sleek and highly visible canopy will serve as an iconic gateway to the Center. The gut renovated glass-fronted lobby transforms the entry into a light filled space that connects the interior to the community. Colorful graphics and back-lit displays express the MEC athletics’ brand while acting as an effective way finding system. Custom molded wall panels evoke athletic ideas of grace, speed and strength. The gym will be renovated to increase capacity and create a separate dance studio. The entire lower floor, currently a cramped warren of service spaces will be transformed into a state-of-the-art fitness center with new locker rooms and separate new pool locker rooms. A new open stair connects the ground floor lobby to the Fitness Center and brings natural light to the lower floor.

Carroll Building Master Plan for Phased Renovation

Located in the heart of Brooklyn, the Carroll Street Building is comprised a beautiful early twentieth century neoclassical building with two more recent additions. SYA provided comprehensive existing condition analysis and a feasibility study for a phased renovation of this key campus building. Renovated and expanded lobbies will add a gracious and hospitable introduction to the building, and the entrance will be transformed into a distinctive and inviting public entry. A large Fitness Center, an expanded and renovated Child Development Center, and a multi-floor glass Central Circulation Hub, featuring a grand stair, elevators, student lounges, and new restrooms, will be added. SYA is currently beginning the $7M design of the first phase of the project, which includes the athletic center.
